I started a new position this week as Senior Director, Forward Deployed Engineering, at KPMG US. Most enterprise AI never leaves the demo. The gap between a model that works in a notebook and a system a regulated business will put its name on is where the real engineering lives. That is the work I joined to lead. Before this, close to ten years at SAP leading engineering and operations across Concur, Ariba, SuccessFactors, Fieldglass and TripIt: 100+ engineers on four continents, a $25M P&L, seven AI products taken from zero to production. What that decade taught me is that the model is rarely the constraint. Trust is. Which human an agent acts for, and what it may touch. Who answers when it goes wrong, and whether an auditor can see all of it. In regulated and FedRAMP environments that is the whole question, and an enterprise that cannot answer it does not ship. It is right not to. Closing that gap, with the security and governance work that makes it real, is the harder job. The leaders who do it can sit with a CISO, a CFO and an engineering team in the same week and leave each of them with a decision they can defend. That is the job I signed up for. Grateful to the people at SAP who taught me most of it. On to the next decade.
