Forward Deployed Engineer. Probably the most buzzword-worthy job title since Data Scientist. But what exactly is it? At its core, an FDE works with business stakeholders to understand problems, design solutions, and bring them to life. End to end. Sound familiar? We’ve called variations of this Technical Consultants, Solutions Engineers, Data Athletes, Analytics Engineers… The concept isn’t new, but AI is accelerating what’s possible. We’ve seen this before with self-service analytics and data wrangling tools like Tableau and Alteryx. Empowering people closest to the business unlocked innovation and taught us valuable lessons about integration, governance, reuse, and scale. Let’s apply those lessons to the development of AI applications and agents. FDEs have tremendous potential to shorten the distance between business problems and working solutions. But realizing that potential at enterprise scale requires more than speed. The real innovation isn’t the job title. It’s rethinking how we build and scale solutions.
