"We hired a GTM engineer. We bought Clay. Why is our pipeline still empty?" That's what I heard recently. Usually it means someone was hired to build tables and was handed a tool. On the other hand... Nobody hires a CFO to run Excel. Nobody hires a developer to type faster. BUT GTM engineers get hired to "do Clay". That's not logical... So what is logical? A GTM engineer connects sales, marketing and technology into one system. The same system could run on Clay, n8n, Make or Claude. In practice: 1. Confirm it by hand first. Automate only what worked manually and keeps repeating. 2. Build around the lead: notification, qualification, meeting prep, the offer, nurture. 3. Run the channels as one system, so outbound, content and events boost each other. A quick hiring test: ask why this segment and why this message. If the answer is a tool, you're hiring an operator. What does GTM engineering look like in your company?
